GST Registration Suspended for Missing Bank Details: Rule 10A Fix and CA Checklist
The GSTIN Was Approved, Then It Was Suspended
A new GST registration is approved. The client starts preparing invoices. A few weeks later, the GST portal shows a suspension message because bank account details were not furnished.
This is no longer just an unfinished profile field. Rule 10A requires most newly registered taxpayers to furnish bank account details within the prescribed time. GSTN has also introduced a system-driven control that can automatically suspend a registration when the requirement is not met.
For a CA firm, the practical lesson is simple: GST registration approval is not the end of onboarding. Bank details must become a tracked post-registration task with an owner, a due date, valid proof, and a confirmation that the GSTIN has returned to the expected status.
What Rule 10A Requires
Except for specified categories, a registered taxpayer must furnish bank account details:
- Within 30 days from the grant of registration, or
- Before filing details of outward supplies in GSTR-1 or IFF,
whichever is earlier.
The details are added after registration through an amendment of non-core fields. This is different from entering bank details in the original registration application. The GST portal prompts the taxpayer to complete the post-registration amendment.
The requirement generally does not apply to taxpayers registered under TDS, TCS, or suo-moto registration. The GSTN guidance also identifies NRTP and OIDAR taxpayers as exceptions, with a specific condition for an OIDAR taxpayer that appoints a representative in India. The category of registration should be checked before applying a general checklist to every GSTIN.
What Changed on the GST Portal?
GSTN’s December 2025 advisory introduced automatic suspension for taxpayers who do not furnish the required bank account details within the Rule 10A timeline. The suspension order can be viewed through the GST portal under Services > User Services > View Notices and Orders.
The portal also provides a compliance route:
- Add the bank details through Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration (Non-Core Fields).
- Submit the amendment with the required verification and supporting document.
- Allow the portal to validate the bank account and update the registration record.
- Check whether the cancellation proceedings have been dropped.
- If the proceedings are not dropped automatically on the same day, use the Initiate Drop Proceedings option in View Notices and Orders where available.
The exact portal messages and available buttons can change. The taxpayer should follow the current instructions shown for the affected GSTIN.
Suspension Is Not the Same as Cancellation
The terms are often mixed together in client conversations, but they describe different stages.
| Status | What it means | Immediate task |
|---|---|---|
| Active | The registration is available for normal compliance, subject to other restrictions | Keep bank validation and return obligations monitored |
| Suspended | The portal has restricted the registration status while the compliance issue is unresolved | Furnish the missing or corrected bank details and check the notice workflow |
| Cancelled | The registration has been cancelled through the applicable process | Check revocation eligibility, pending returns, tax, interest, late fee, and final-return obligations |
Adding bank details can resolve a Rule 10A issue, but it should not be described as a universal revocation of every kind of cancellation. If the GSTIN has already been cancelled or has other pending return defaults, the CA must follow the relevant cancellation and revocation process.
How to Add Bank Details Correctly
The fastest way to create another delay is to submit an account number or IFSC that does not match the taxpayer’s records. Prepare the amendment from verified information.
1. Confirm the taxpayer and GSTIN
Check the legal name, PAN, GSTIN, registration date, and the category of registration. Make sure the bank account belongs to the correct taxpayer and that the details are not being prepared for another GSTIN of the same client.
2. Prepare valid account information
Keep the account number, account type, IFSC, bank name, and account-holder information together. Compare the PAN connected to the account with the PAN on the GST registration. A mismatch can create a validation remark or delay.
3. Keep supporting proof ready
The GSTN user guide requires at least one supporting document for the bank account. Use a clear, current document and ensure the name, account number, and IFSC can be read. Do not upload an image so unclear that the reviewer or validation process cannot identify the account.
4. Submit through non-core amendment
Open the bank details section in the non-core amendment, enter the information, upload the required document, provide the amendment date and reason, and submit through the available DSC or EVC option.
5. Check the validation status
After submission, review the bank account status in the GST profile. A successful verification is different from a pending validation or a validation completed with remarks. Keep a copy of the acknowledgement and the final status.
Common Reasons Bank Validation Takes Longer
The portal may not show a clean result immediately. Review the basics before escalating:
- The account number contains a typing error.
- The IFSC is old or belongs to another branch.
- The account is inactive, closed, or restricted by the bank.
- The name or PAN in the bank record does not match the GST registration.
- The uploaded proof is unclear or does not show the required details.
- The account was added to the wrong GSTIN or client workspace.
- The bank validation service is still pending.
The GST portal guidance states that account validation can show a verified status, a failed status, or a result with remarks. A result with remarks should be investigated rather than treated as a successful verification without reading the message.
What If the Registration Is Already Suspended?
Use a short recovery checklist:
- Open the GST portal and confirm the current registration status.
- Download the suspension order or notice from View Notices and Orders.
- Check whether the reason is missing bank details, invalid details, or another issue.
- File the non-core amendment with verified account information.
- Submit the amendment through the required verification method.
- Check the bank validation status and registration status again.
- Look for the automatic dropping of cancellation proceedings.
- If the portal still shows proceedings after compliance, check whether the Initiate Drop Proceedings action is available.
- Save the acknowledgement, validation result, status screen, and any order or communication.
Do not assume that uploading the details has completed the recovery. The final step is confirming the GSTIN status and the notice workflow.
What if the Bank Account Was Entered Incorrectly?
An incorrect account should be corrected through the same non-core amendment route. First compare the bank statement or official proof with the GST portal entry. If only one account is listed, the portal may not allow it to be deleted until another account is added. The GST user guide notes that an existing account cannot be deleted when it is the only account on the profile.
The CA should keep both the original error and the corrected submission in the client file. This matters when the registration was suspended, a cancellation proceeding was opened, or the client needs to explain a delay in completing the post-registration requirement.
A New GSTIN Onboarding Checklist for CA Firms
The best way to prevent Rule 10A suspension is to complete the task before it becomes a portal problem.
At registration approval
- Record the grant date and GSTIN.
- Identify whether the taxpayer is covered by a Rule 10A exception.
- Ask for verified bank proof immediately.
- Assign a staff member and reviewer.
Before the first outward-supply filing
- Check whether bank details are already furnished.
- Confirm that the account belongs to the registered taxpayer.
- Complete the non-core amendment if the details are missing.
- Do not proceed as if the deadline is only 30 days away when GSTR-1 or IFF will be filed earlier.
After submission
- Save the amendment acknowledgement.
- Monitor bank validation status.
- Check the GSTIN status after validation.
- Check for View Notices and Orders updates.
- Record the final result in the client onboarding checklist.
For a practice managing many new registrations, use a dashboard or task list with the grant date, bank-detail due date, account-proof status, amendment status, and final GSTIN status. A reminder without an owner is easy to miss.
Do Not Confuse Bank Details with Refund Validation
Bank details can matter in more than one GST workflow, but the checks are not identical. The post-registration Rule 10A amendment is about furnishing bank account details in the registration profile. Refund applications may involve separate bank validation and supporting requirements.
If a client says the account is already visible somewhere on the portal, check which module and which GSTIN the information belongs to. A bank account used in a refund file does not automatically prove that the Rule 10A registration requirement has been completed.
If the GSTIN Has Already Been Cancelled
Do not use the Rule 10A recovery steps as a substitute for revocation advice. The GST portal’s revocation guidance says that where a registration was cancelled for failure to furnish returns, the pending returns and amounts payable, including applicable interest, penalties, or late fee, must be addressed before revocation can be filed.
The CA should first identify why the registration was cancelled, whether the cancellation is still within the applicable revocation process, and which returns or payments are outstanding. A bank-detail amendment may be part of the record, but it is not the complete answer to a cancelled GSTIN.
Where Invozen Fits
Invozen is not a GST registration amendment tool and does not suspend, restore, or cancel a GSTIN. Bank details should be submitted through the official GST portal by the taxpayer or authorised CA team.
Once the GSTIN is active, Invozen helps the team keep invoice records, client workspaces, document dates, and review status organised for the compliance work that follows. A clear onboarding handoff reduces the risk of invoices arriving in a workspace before the registration’s basic compliance tasks have been completed.
The important control is outside the invoice itself: record the GSTIN grant date, complete the bank-detail task, confirm the registration status, and preserve the acknowledgement before the client begins regular filing.
The Short Version
For a newly registered GSTIN:
- Check the Rule 10A category and deadline immediately after approval.
- Furnish bank details within 30 days or before filing GSTR-1 or IFF, whichever is earlier, where the requirement applies.
- Use the non-core amendment route on the GST portal.
- Verify the account number, IFSC, PAN match, proof, and validation status.
- If the GSTIN is suspended, check the order and complete the amendment before assuming the issue is closed.
- Look for automatic dropping of cancellation proceedings and use Initiate Drop Proceedings if the portal provides it.
- If the GSTIN is already cancelled, follow the separate revocation and pending-return process.
- Keep the acknowledgement and final status with the client onboarding record.
GST registration approval creates the GSTIN. Completing the bank-detail task keeps that GSTIN ready for ongoing compliance.
